Truganini

Download 25.43 MB

A new biography goes beyond what Truganini has come to represent - the so-called 'last of her race' in Van Diemen's Land - to introduce a wily, lively woman who packed many adventures into her life.
Truganini was a survivor, adept at picking people who presented the best of terrible options.

kanamaluka TAMAR MUD

It must be said that so, so many do not seem to be in full possession of the FULLspectrum of the information regarding the CULTURALlandscaping that has gone on at the confluence of two fresh water rivers and an estuary – CATCHMENT43 – and over eons. That is, you and me and everyone paying to do something that should not be done.

We have seen, and are seeing, the consequences of HEROICengineering driven by COLONIALimperatives but many have not, and will not, really see anything like what is really happening. We need have no sympathy whatsoever, none at all, for those who want everyone to come along with them to re-engage in HEROICengineering and pay for it so they can play ‘sailor’ on what is really a shallow waterway, a swamp in times past and a geography that if left to its own devices will deliver something quite wondrous in the way of a WETland

This ‘place’ was the most fecund place on the island lutruwita that is now Tasmania and it has been dug up, despoiled, poisoned, polluted and all in the cause of having a 'shipping port' where there should not, need not, have been one and where there is no longer any need for one.

HERORICengineering will not stop flooding any more than ‘Cnut the Great’ could stop the incoming tide.

This lutruwita place was known to the ‘First Tasmanians’, so far as it can be deduced, as ponrabbel and on the evidence a CULTURALlandscape that served the people well – as it might again

There is ample water on the kanamaluka TAMAR for the sailing stuff down river and to the sea. The case for you, me, taxpayers, ratepayers, whoever, to pay for the restoration of HERORICengineering is vacuous and it needs to be ignored.

It must be said that those who expect this kind of 'public expenditure' do not seem to be in full possession of the FULLspectrum of the information available regarding the CULTURALlandscaping that has gone on at the confluence of two fresh water rivers systems and a tidal estuary over eons.

GROOM the mud, CELEBRATE the mud but please, please, let us not again indulge in HEROICengineeingan exercise in pointlessness. It was folly before, it would be folly again and that is a fact even if it is something that some cannot see or are unprepared to accept for whatever reason.

In the end this is a cultural issue that impacts upon a diverse multifaceted 'Community of Ownership and Interest' and it is an issue where the communities involved have rights and obligations. This must be understood and a CITIZENS' JURY/ASSEMBLY would/could help plot a way forward.
